Projects

The Glob3science group is a partner in several Italian, European and International projects, leading projects, work packages or participating in research.

RETURN

The NextGenerationEU project RETURN (Multi-Risk sciEnce for resilienT commUnities undeR a changiNg climate) is an extended partnership grouping 26 among universities, research institutes, institutions, companies and non-profits. It aims at promoting transdisciplinary research on natural and anthropogenic environmental risk in Italy. Through a strong technological base and a strict contact with public administration and stakeholders, RETURN aims at tighting the connections between science and practice and enhancing technological and scientific transfer.

NEXUS-NESS

The PRIMA project NEXUS-NESS aims at using the Water Energy Food Ecosystem Nexus approach to develop strategies and practices for a fair and sustainable use of natural resources in four Nexus Ecosystem Living Labs. It does so with an approach that is strongly oriented towards Responsible Research and Innovation, involving stakeholders directly to co-define challenges and co-construct strategies. Glob3science is responsible for the hydrological modeling of both the status quo and the impacts of potential Nexus actions, in an innovative stakeholder-informed way.

NEWAVE

NEWAVE is an EU-H2020 project training Early Stage Researchers to become new water governance leaders able to pave the way for the future understanding of water governance. It does so by creating a multicultural and transdisciplinary water governance community and pushing towards the creation of a pioneering research agenda on water governance key issues. Of the 3Ps (problématiques, paradigms, patterns) constituting the NEWAVE heuristic framework, Glob3science is primarily responsible for the problématiques pillar, aiming at identifying the main global water governance challenges, in a critical way also with respect to traditional agenda-setting perspectives.

Ag-WaMED

Ag-WAMED is an European project devoted to the assessment of non-conventional water uses in the Mediterranean area, with the aim to provide alternative sources of water in an equitable way. Hydrological modeling and climate projections are integrated into an innovative and adaptive governance scheme and combined with a participatory approach, so to ensure a fair and sustainable use of water. These management solutions are tested on four case studies, but developed so that they can be rapplied at the mediterranean scale. Glob3science is responsible for supporting the modeling of non-conventional water uses in current and future climatic settings.

AWESOME

The PRIMA project AWESOME proposes a decision-analytic platform to address multisectoral water-ecosystem-food tradeoffs at different scales: the Mediterranean region, the national scales and the regional ones. Alternative planning portfolios and innovative technological solutions are individuated and tested, to deliver shared environmental and socio-economic benefits. Glob3science provides the project with a range of crop redistribution scenarios for current and future climate conditions in order to guarantee crop production while saving water resources.

ASSO

The Regione Lombardia project ASSO focuses on former food products as a resource for pig feeding. Former food products are products aimed at human consumption that do not reach the final consumer. Impacts both on the pig’s diet and nutritional balance and on the environment are assessed, to evaluate the use of former food products as a sustainable alternative in a circular economy setting. Glob3science quantifies water and land savings connected to the use of former food products with respect to the use of traditional feed.

CASTLE

Drought, or, more in general, periods of water scarcity, have been increasing in frequency and intensity in the last years, impacting substantially on agricultural production, a crucial asset in Italy’s economy. Competition in the use of water has caused water availability problems, water scarcity and, consequently, water rationing in 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2022. The project CASTLE (Creating Agricultural reSilience Through smaLl rEservoirs) aims to increase the knowledge on the role of small reservoirs in agriculture to improve water resource management. The project intends to perform the census of SmAR and water needs for irrigation, to map available water resource volumes and assess water needs at the national scale, and to identify the best siting of new water supplies.
